A completely revised and expanded edition of a classic resource In the over twenty years since the publication of the SecondEdition of Order Statistics, the theories and applications of thisdynamic field have changed markedly. Meeting the challenges anddemands of today’s students and research community, authorsH. A. David and H. N. Nagaraja return with a completely revised andupdated Order Statistics, Third Edition. Chapters two through nine of this comprehensive volume deal withfinite-sample theory, with individual topics grouped underdistribution theory (chapters two through six) and statisticalinference (chapters seven through nine). Chapters ten and elevencover asymptotic theory for central, intermediate, and extremeorder statistics, representing twice the coverage of this subjectthan the previous edition. New sections include: Stochastic orderings Characterizations Distribution-free prediction intervals Bootstrap estimations Moving order statistics Studentized range Ranked-set sampling Estimators of tail index The authors further explain application procedures for manydata-analysis techniques and quality control. An appendix providesa guide to related tables and computer algorithms. Extensiveexercise sets have been updated since the last edition. In spite ofmany eliminations, the total number of references has increasedfrom 1,000 to 1,500. Expanded coverage of shortcut methods, robust estimation, lifetesting, reliability, L-statistics, and extreme-value theorycomplete this one-of-a-kind resource. Students and researchers oforder statistics will appreciate this updated and thoroughedition.

The IMF has released the 2013 External Debt Statistics: Guide for Compilers and Users (2013 EDS Guide), which contains updated global standards for the compilation, reporting, and analytical use of external debt statistics. The 2013 EDS Guide was prepared under the responsibility of the nine organizations in the Inter-Agency Task Force on Finance Statistics (TFFS), in close consultation with national compilers of external debt, balance of payments, and international investment position statistics. [1] The 2013 EDS Guide reflects the significant developments in international finance since the issuance of the 2003 EDS Guide. The 2013 EDS Guide provides guidance on (1) the concepts, definitions, and classifications of external debt data; (2) the sources and techniques for compiling these data; and (3) the analytical uses of these data. The concepts set out in the 2013 EDS Guide are fully harmonized with those of the System of National Accounts 2008 (2008 SNA) and the sixth edition of the IMF’s Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual (BPM6). [1] The TFFS is chaired by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and its member agencies are the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), the Commonwealth Secretariat (ComSec), the European Central Bank (ECB), the European Commission (Eurostat), the IMF, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Paris Club Secretariat, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), and the World Bank.

The global financial crisis of recent years and the associated large fiscal deficits and debt levels that have impacted many countries underscores the importance of reliable and timely government statistics and, more broadly, public sector debt as a critical element in countries fiscal and external sustainability. Public Sector Debt Statistics is the first international guide of its kind, and its primary objectives are to improve the quality and timeliness of key debt statistics and promote a convergence of recording practices to foster international comparability and as a reference for national compilers and users for compiling and disseminating these data. Like other statistical guides published by the IMF, this one was prepared in consultation with countries and international agencies, including the nine organizations of the Inter-Agency Task Force on Finance Statistics (TFFS). The guide's preparation was based on the broad range of experience of our institutions and benefitted from consultation with national compilers of government finance and public sector debt statistics. The guide's concepts are harmonized with those of the System of National Accounts (2008) and the Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual, Sixth Edition.

How can we measure the contribution which libraries make to society in the age of the internet? The existing international library statistics were developed nearly forty years ago and do not reflect library activity today. An international collaboration between IFLA, the UNESCO Institute of Statistics and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has developed standards for new library indicators for the twenty-first century. These conference papers present the first results using the new statistics, and look forward to the next steps. The conference also highlights a variety of other initiatives and developments in the fields of library statistics, benchmarking and indicators.

This introductory text presents the use of statistical methods as an integral part of biological investigation, yet one whose superficial complexities have deterred many biologists from using them. The author argues that the difficulties, such as they are, do not lie in mathematical manipulation, but in grasping a few simple, but unfamiliar concepts. He emphasizes the need for precisely defining problems and for careful selection of the most appropriate methods - a wide range of which are described and illustrated. Each chapter ends with a set of problems which are intended to help the student gain practical experience. No previous knowledge is assumed, and the student is encouraged to develop a competent and critical approach to analysing numerical data. In this second edition, the scope of the book has been extended, problems have been solved in a more satisfactory way, and a greater number of illustrative examples have been added.

Statistics Explained is a reader-friendly introduction to experimental design and statistics for undergraduate students in the life sciences, particularly those who do not have a strong mathematical background. Hypothesis testing and experimental design are discussed first. Statistical tests are then explained using pictorial examples and a minimum of formulae. This class-tested approach, along with a well-structured set of diagnostic tables will give students the confidence to choose an appropriate test with which to analyse their own data sets. Presented in a lively and straight-forward manner, Statistics Explained will give readers the depth and background necessary to proceed to more advanced texts and applications. It will therefore be essential reading for all bioscience undergraduates, and will serve as a useful refresher course for more advanced students.

NEW AND REVISED THIRD EDITION This book introduces basic statistics and statistical concepts, with each chapter building in sophistication to prepare for the concepts that follow. Emphasizing comprehension and interpretation over computation, the book still takes a serious approach to statistics, tailored to the real world of crime and justice. The updated and expanded 3rd edition includes additional chapter-end exercises; expanded computer exercises that can be performed in the Student Version of SPSS; extended discussion of multivariate regression models, including interaction and non-linear effects; a new chapter on multinomial and ordinal logistic regression models, designed for comprehension and interpretation; and new material on multivariate regression models. "One course that students always put off until they are nearing the completion of their degree requirements is statistics. The fear is that the material is either too difficult or the book doesn’t make sense. Although as teachers we can do little about the former, we can do much about the latter, and Weisburd and Britt have done just that. Statistics in Criminal Justice is precisely the book I wish I learned statistics with when I was a student. It presents readers with the basic tools needed to be a consumer and user of criminal justice research, includes many examples spanning a wide range of criminal justice/criminological topics, and the end-of-chapter study questions and computer exercises reinforce key concepts. To the authors’ credit, this text goes even farther by introducing the reader to more advanced forms of regression-based analyses. As such, the book can and should be read by undergraduate students starting off in higher education, graduate students embarking on their academic careers, and even seasoned faculty who every now and again need to recall a formula or brush up on some matters. After reading Statistics in Criminal Justice, I am sure you will join me in thanking these two first-rate scholars for taking the time to teach us statistics in an enjoyable and effective manner." -Alex R. Piquero, Presidential Scholar & Professor, University of Maryland-College Park

This book presents Bayes’ theorem, the estimation of unknown parameters, the determination of confidence regions and the derivation of tests of hypotheses for the unknown parameters. It does so in a simple manner that is easy to comprehend. The book compares traditional and Bayesian methods with the rules of probability presented in a logical way allowing an intuitive understanding of random variables and their probability distributions to be formed.
