Antiviral drug development has led to significant advances in the control of globally prevalent viral infections by the hepatitis C (HCV) and the human immunodeficiency viruses. Nonetheless, there are current gaps in the armamentarium against global viral infections due to some herpes viruses, the hepatitis B virus, and the deadly filovirus Ebola and arenavirus Tacaribe responsible of outbreaks of hemorrhagic fever in emerging countries. Arbidol (ARB) is a cost-effective antiviral with broad-spectrum activity, administered for decades in Russia and China against flu. We showed that ARB inhibits HCV infection, and has potent antiviral activity against the Ebola, Tacaribe, hepatitis B and human herpes-8 viruses. Since these viruses have divergent life cycles, we posit that ARB may exhibit varied modes of action against different viruses. Careful dissection of molecular mechanisms of action of ARB against HCV and the Ebola virus revealed that ARB blocked viral entry. ARB might, therefore, constitute a pharmacological approach against globally prevalent viruses, and an affordable molecule for emerging countries in urgent need for effective antiviral therapies.

How can the performing arts add value to peacebuilding programs? Is it possible to use participatory theatre to reconnect and reconcile enemies? What is the trauma-healing effect for those acting in a theatre troupe? Claus Schrowange has explored these questions and the opportunities of using forum theatre in peace work in Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, and DR Congo. His conclusion is that forum theatre is more than mere entertainment. It is an aesthetic tool for social change. But the value of theatre is not generated automatically, the way it is done matters. If it is done in a participatory manner with an authentic, be¬lie¬vable acting style, involving both the audience and stage actor in a vivid and touching experience, the impact is immediately felt. This book presents the approach Schrowange developed together with a team of African theatre practitioners in a variety of circumstances and environments. It is illustrated with case studies taken from the author ́s direct experience of using the approach he describes in Eastern DR Congo and Rwanda.

Abu l-Mundhir Bashir, b. Muhammad b. Mahbub (d. ca. 290/908) was a prominent Ibadi scholar and author of authoritative theological and legal books. His writings reflect expert knowledge of Ibadi religious law and a consistent inclination to rationalist kalam in contrast to the traditionalist tendency of earlier Ibadi scholarship in Oman. Early Ibadi Literature contains a first edition of three Arabic treatises by Abu l-Mundhir. Two of the texts, Kitab al-Rasf fi l-Tawhid (Book of Paving about Divine Unity) and Kitab al-Muharaba (Book of Warfare), were until recently considered lost by western scholars. With their discovery, a significant new source for the study of the development of early Ibadi thought in Oman has become available. The third text, Abu l-Mundhir's so-called Sira, sets forth his legal opinion condemning the deposition of the Umani Ibadi Imam al-Salt b. Malik in 272/886. The edition of each of the texts is based on four out of five manuscripts kept in three private libraries in Oman, the Salimi library in Bidiyya, the Sayyid Muhammad b. Ahmad Al Bu Sahidi library in al-Sib and the collection of Shaykh Ahmad b. Hamad al-Khalili, the recent Grand Mufti of Oman.
