Richard Mitchell was the Underground Grammarian. Here, back in print after many years, is The Gift of Fire, his last book, with a preface by his daughter, Daphne Mitchell Keller. In this collection of interconnected essays, he explores the teachings of Jesus and Socrates, parables of St. Peter and the Brothers Grimm, and the writings of Orwell and Aquinas, and considers what they have to teach us about living a good life. Best known for his long-running newsletter, The Underground Grammarian, and his previous writings about education, Mitchell guides his readers through the thorny perils of everyday morality, helping them respond with deep self-awareness to everything from traffic jams to war, partisan politics, and inequality. From the preface: "Nowhere in The Gift of Fire does Richard Mitchell, who was my father, claim that we can't think. Quite the opposite, in fact. There is no person, he says, who does not have the capacity to be educated, no one who lacks the ability to become able to tell the good from the bad, or who is somehow prevented forever from taking the grasp of his own mind. There are those who have not learned to do these things, or who are unwilling to do them, or who don't even know that they could be done. It's no surprise that many people don't do them. But he would (and in fact does) argue that every one of us could."

Dan Caro has been proving the world wrong since he was in diapers. When he was two years old, he was engulfed in a fireball during a gasoline explosion in the family garage and was left with third-degree burns over most of his body—so severe that doctors held out little hope he’d survive more than a few days. Dan was in such excruciating pain that his devastated parents silently prayed for God to end their son’s suffering and welcome him into heaven. And it seemed as if God was willing to oblige—Dan technically died on the operating table several times in the hours following the accident. But even though his heart stopped, Dan’s spirit wasn’t ready to give up . . . somehow he knew he had work to do. Despite the odds, Dan survived, but life would not be easy. The fire left him badly maimed and disfigured. His hands were burned away, as was most of his skin and nearly all of his face. He would endure years of painful surgeries and endless months of lonely isolation in burn units, only to suffer the agony of social rejection, shunned and called "monster" by both children and adults in his Louisiana hometown. With the support of his loving parents and siblings, Dan did not despair. He kept his heart open to the world and focused on the positive energy around him. Before his sixth birthday, he vowed that his life would not be defined by the way others saw him or the restrictions of his so-called physical handicaps. Dan set himself a series of life goals, starting with the art of tying his shoelaces without fingers. Once he had achieved that milestone, he decided he could do anything . . . so why not learn to play the drums? When Dan was told he’d never be able to do so, he promised himself that one day he’d become one of the most accomplished drummers in the city that gave jazz its name—New Orleans! Since that day, Dan’s music has inspired thousands, and many more have also been inspired by his personal philosophy of focusing on the positive, refusing to accept limits, and living life with an open heart. Today, the young man who was once shunned and called "monster" by his neighbors is very much in demand as a public speaker and travels the country encouraging others to not just overcome life’s hardships, but to view adversity as a gift that can drive us toward reaching our full potential. This is Dan’s first book.

It rises suddenly out of the Sonoran Desert landscape, towering over the tallest tree or cactus, a commanding building with a sensuous dome, elliptical vaults, and sturdy bell towers. In ancient mythology, the Titan Prometheus was punished by the gods for bringing man the gift of fire—an event that set humankind on its course of knowledge. As punishment for making man as powerful as gods, Prometheus was bound to a rock; every day his immortal body was devoured by a giant eagle. But in Walter Mosley's The Gift of Fire, those chains cease to be, and the great champion of man walks from that immortal prison into present-day South Central Los Angeles. What is the theological place of the Holy Spirit with respect to the forgiveness of sins in the sacrament of penance? This study examines the role of the Spirit in the theology of sacramental forgiveness of Thomas Aquinas (1224/5-1274), who is often blamed for the "Geistvergessenheit" of Western theology. In the first part of this study it is shown that in Thomas' theology notions like guilt and forgiveness function within the context of a relationship of friendship between God and human beings. Constitutive for this relationship is the indwelling of God, which is 'appropriated' to the Holy Spirit. It is explained that Thomas understands appropriation, i.e. the practice of ascribing to divine Persons individually what belongs to the divine essence in general, as a part of proper God-talk, which takes into account the limitations of our language vis-a-vis God. In the second part of this study, it is argued that the notion of the causality of the sacrament of penance, i.e. that it effects the forgiveness of sins that it signifies, can only be evaluated properly if the sacrament of penance is not only seen as prolongation of the incarnation, i.e. the visible mission of the Son, but also as accompanied by the continous invisible mission of the Holy Spirit. Eric Luijten (1964) has been a research-fellow of the Catholic Theological University at Utrecht, the Netherlands, and at present is rector of studies of the Arienskonvikt, the priest seminary of the archdiocese Utrecht and the diocese Groningen.

Ji jant sabh Saran tumaari sarb chint Tudh paase jo Tudh bhaave soo-ii changaa Ik Nanak ki ardaase [Raga Bilawal] all beings seek your protection. They leave their worries with you. Whatever pleases you is good. That is Nanak’s prayer. Guru Nanak spiritual beliefs and practices, based on his direct experience of God, were profoundly transformational. He brought the path to enlightenment closer to the masses by his use of a language that they understood. His monotheism, coupled with his emphasis on the pursuit of divinity while living the life of an ordinary householder, was a significant departure from the prevailing beliefs in renunciation, pilgrimage, and other rituals. A gift of grace: the essence of Guru Nanak spirituality simplifies the gurus core spiritual message for the modern reader. The author, at the outset, enunciates the spiritual foundation of the gurus world view and his conception of reality, including the nature of God. Japji Sahib, a foundational religious text, is presented in its original form together with an English translation and an in-depth commentary. The book concludes with a representative selection of the gurus hymns.

The classic collection of sixteen sermons preached and compiled by Dr. King As Dr. King prepared for the Birmingham campaign in early 1963, he drafted the final sermons for Strength to Love, a volume of his best-known homilies. King had begun working on the sermons during a fortnight in jail in July 1962. Having been arrested for holding a prayer vigil outside Albany City Hall, King and Ralph Abernathy shared a jail cell for fifteen days that was, according to King, ‘‘dirty, filthy, and ill-equipped’’ and “the worse I have ever seen.” While behind bars, he spent uninterrupted time preparing the drafts for classic sermons such as “Loving Your Enemies,” “Love in Action,” and “Shattered Dreams,” and continued to work on the volume after his release. A Gift of Love includes these classic sermons, along with two new preachings. Collectively they present King’s fusion of Christian teachings and social consciousness, and promote his prescient vision of love as a social and political force for change.
