Our nameless narrator, who brings an open but critical perspective, ponders the deep questions of life as he searches along the River for truth, meaning, purpose, and ultimately, a new beginning. Accompanied by a compassionate and insightful Christian who uniquely understands the true significance of the River and the Road, he faces intellectual and moral challenges from diverse directions that threaten his worldview. Interwoven with the gospel themes (both false and true) are a number of other encounters with angels, skeptics, seekers, temptresses, and travelers with a variety of religious viewpoints. The allegory, illuminating and penetrating—through stressing the fundamental notion of salvation from sin (not only its consequences)—aims to undercut some of the most prevalent misconceptions of the gospel message today. The result is a narrative that will both delight and educate, is both ponderous and free-flowing, and will both entrench Christians in some of their most beloved doctrines and challenge the very foundations of their theology.

For myself and my own writing career, this new book represents a definite change in genre. I have written many stories about many different subjects but, I have never written a romantic novel. Some female authors argue that only women can write good stories about love but, I don’t support that theory. I figure that such women are merely protecting their turf so that they can continue their own career with their publisher of choice. A man feels emotions just as women do. I love, I feel and I react. Even though female writers do seem to have an apparent monopoly on this subject, I am going to take a shot at leveling the playing field. This book is about the three best friends that I had while I was still a mountain man and living at Hazard, KY. Their names were John Blake, Mulva Edwards, Pearl Edwards and myself. This is their story. I grew up with them and I risked my life for them so, together, the four of us assumed the many problems of a mixed racial romance back in the 1940’s when such a subject was considered to be ‘Banned in Boston’. I would have married Mulva early on but she chose my best friend Johnny Blake instead of me. Mulva made a good choice but, I, the author, will always be jealous. Of the better things that I have done, I, the author, have helped to set those two lovers free. I would tell you exactly where they are now living but, I can’t afford to do that for the fear of endangering their lives. Some of the Mafia are still looking for both of them because of what we did to them in Paterson, NJ a few years ago.

In the fall of 1948, Ernest Hemingway made his first extended visit to Italy in thirty years. His reacquaintance with Venice, a city he loved, provided the inspiration for Across the River and into the Trees, the story of Richard Cantwell, a war-ravaged American colonel stationed in Italy at the close of the Second World War, and his love for a young Italian countess. A poignant, bittersweet homage to love that overpowers reason, to the resilience of the human spirit, and to the worldweary beauty and majesty of Venice, Across the River and into the Trees stands as Hemingway's statement of defiance in response to the great dehumanizing atrocities of the Second World War. Hemingway's last full-length novel published in his lifetime, it moved John O'Hara in The New York Times Book Review to call him “the most important author since Shakespeare.”
