"Edinger has greatly enriched my understanding of psychology through the avenue of alchemy. No other contribution has been as helpful as this for revealing, in a word, the anatomy of the psyche and how it applies to where one is in his or her process. This is a significant amplification and extension of Jung's work. Two hundred years from now, it will still be a useful handbook and an inspiring aid to those who care about individuation." -- Psychological Perspectives

Over the past decades, Lawrence Friedman has emerged as one of the most erudite and provocative theoriss in contemporary psychotherapy. The Anatomy of Psychotherapy interweaves Friedman's major contributions to the analytic and psychiatric literature with extensive new material in arriving at an extraordinarily rich and nuanced appreciation of psychotherapy. The Anatomy of Psychotherapy describes how the therapist makes use of theories and styles in order to achieve equilibrium under stress. This stress, according to Friedman, is related to the "absolute ambiguity" that is essential to psychotherapy. To cope with this ambiguity, the therapist alternates among three different roles, those of reader, historian, and pragmatic operator. Friedman examines these "disambiguating postures" in detail, paying special attention to their bearing on the therapist's narrative prejudice, the relativity of his knowledge, and the relationship of his work to natural science and hermeneutics. Brilliantly constructed and masterfully written, The Anatomy of Psychotherapy traverses the same basic themes in each of its six sections. Readers who are interested in theory can hone in on relevant topics or the work of particular theorists. Readers seeking insight into the demands of daily clinical work, on the other hand, can bypass the systematic studies and immerse themselves in Friedman's engrossing reflections on the experience of psychotherapy. Best served will be those who ponder Friedman's writings and therapy as complementary meditations issuing from a single, unifying vision, one in which psychotherapy, in both its promise and frustrations, becomes a subtle interplay among theories about psychotherapy, the personal styles of psychotherapists, and the practical exigencies of aiding those in distress.

The standard test battery developed by Rapaport, Gill, and Schafer at the Menninger Foundation constituted the most important research instrument (apart from clinical interviews) of the Foundation's psychotherapy research project. The battery's influence on clinical diagnosis and on research in personality assessment and change has been tremendous. In the hands of highly trained and skilled psychologists, the battery, constructed chiefly around projective tests, has been invaluable for diagnosing difficult cases. The complexity of interpreting it, however, and the many dimensions along which its findings can be organized, have made it frustratingly difficult to use in formal research. And its cost, because of the great time investment it requires, has made clinicians reticent about using it on a large scale. Dr. Appelbaum, an experienced psychotherapist and psycho analyst, was a distinguished member of the group of highly skilled psychologists who applied this test battery in the psychotherapy research reported here, although his role in this instance was re stricted to analyzing the findings of others who administered and interpreted the tests. In recent years, Dr. Appelbaum has been eval uating the mechanisms and effects of various psychotherapeutic approaches.

The Anatomy of Experiential Impact is the second volume of a trilogy, and can be read independently of the other books in the series. The first volume, The Induction of Hypnosis (2014), presented Dr. Zeig's model of hypnosis. The third, Psychoaerobics (2015), presented an experiential method of therapist development. In this book, you will encounter a model of brief therapy that can be applied independent of your preferred model of therapy. Change in therapy is best elicited by the experiences people live, not the information they receive. Hypnosis is fundamentally an experiential method, the imperative of which is, "By living this experience, you can reclaim your ability to change or cope adequately." The Anatomy of Experiential Impact Through Ericksonian Psychotherapy promotes experiential methods that are derived from a hypnotic orientation, offering a stepwise plan for creating an experientially based brief therapy.

FROM NARCISSISM TO AGGRESSION, AN ORIGINAL LOOK AT THE PERSONALITY TRAITS AND BEHAVIORS THAT CONSTITUTE EVIL In this groundbreaking book, renowned psychiatrist Michael H. Stone explores the concept and reality of evil from a new perspective. In an in-depth discussion of the personality traits and behaviors that constitute evil across a wide spectrum, Dr. Stone takes a clarifying scientific approach to a topic that for centuries has been inadequately explained by religious doctrines. Stone has created a 22-level hierarchy of evil behavior, which loosely reflects the structure of Dante's Inferno. Basing his analysis on the detailed biographies of more than 600 violent criminals, he traces two salient personality traits that run the gamut from those who commit crimes of passion to perpetrators of sadistic torture and murder. One trait is narcissism, as exhibited in people who are so self-centered that they have little or no ability to care about their victims. The other is aggression, the use of power over another person to inflict humiliation, suffering, and death. What do psychology, psychiatry, and neuroscience tell us about the minds of those whose actions could be described as evil? And what will that mean for the rest of us? Stone discusses how an increased understanding of the causes of evil will affect the justice system. He predicts a day when certain persons can safely be declared salvageable and restored to society and when early signs of violence in children may be corrected before potentially dangerous patterns become entrenched.

Grief happens to everyone. Universal and enveloping, grief cannot be ignored or denied. This original new book by psychologist Dorothy P. Holinger uses humanistic and physiological approaches to describe grief's impact on the bereaved. Taking examples from literature, music, poetry, paleoarchaeology, personal experience, memoirs, and patient narratives, Holinger describes what happens in the brain, the heart, and the body of the bereaved. Readers will learn what grief is like after a loved one dies: how language and clarity of thought become elusive, why life feels empty, why grief surges and ebbs so persistently, and why the bereaved cry. Resting on a scientific foundation, this literary book shows the bereaved how to move through the grieving process and how understanding grief in deeper, more multidimensional ways can help quell this sorrow and allow life to be lived again with joy. Volume II: "Nicholas Cummings has been called a lot of things in his life ... entrepreneur is one of them. The Cummings legacy will be voluminous and manifold. His contributions to the field have spanned the many definitions of practicing psychology – from education to policy, from business to ongoing exploration. He has been predicting trends, cautioning those who would listen, and negotiating the obstacles to efficacious delivery of quality therapeutic services for over half a century. With this book, we pause once again to revisit some of the most important of his projects as an entrepreneur. Editors Thomas, Cummings, and O’Donohue took on a difficult task when they set out to convince Cummings to tell the story behind the story of how and why he created the various organizations selected here. Of course, he balked at the idea of "showing off" these successes, but the editors were finally able to persuade him of the potential benefit to readers. First, there is the revelation of psychologist as entrepreneur and the delicate balance that is required in order to proceed in this direction with integrity and effectiveness. More important, these organizations were for the most part conceived of as being in service to the profession or to its legislators rather than being focused on profits. Their success, therefore, has had more than a little to do with strengthening the ability of the field to move forward even as it is pulled in different directions. In the end, Nick Cummings decided to tell the story behind the story and readers will be very glad he did. Part history, part memoir, this is a fascinating whodunit, and each time you’ll find Nick Cummings ... seeing the need, envisioning a way to meet it, and then doing it!"--
