The 2016 Human Development Report focuses on how human development can be ensured for every one, now and in future. It starts with an account of the hopes and challenges of today’s world, envisioning where humanity wants to go. Our vision draws from and builds on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that the 193 member states of the United Nations endorsed last year, and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) the world has committed to achieve. The Report explores who has been left behind in human development progress and why. It argues that to ensure that human development reaches everyone, a mere mapping of the nature and location of deprivations is not enough. Some aspects of the human development framework and assessment perspectives have to be brought to the fore. The Report also identifies the national policies and key strategies to ensure that will enable every human being achieve at least basic human development and to sustain and protect the gains. And it addresses the structural challenges of global institutions and presents options for reform.

Twenty five years ago the first Human Development Report in 1990 began with a simple notion: that development is about enlarging people’s choices—focusing broadly on the richness of human lives rather than narrowly on the richness of economies. This Report starts with a fundamental question—how can work enhance human development? The Report takes a broad view of work, going beyond jobs and taking into account such activities as unpaid care work, voluntary work and creative work—all of which contribute to the richness of human lives. The Report highlights impressive progress on human development over the past quarter century.

Important signs of progress in food security and nutrition and a commitment to sustainable development marked 2016. Yet challenges arising from dramatically changing political, economic, and demographic landscapes are sure to test the international momentum behind the new sustainable development agenda. As rapid urbanization continues around the world, poverty, food insecurity, and malnutrition are increasingly becoming urban problems. This rapid shift is changing diets and reshaping food chains—from small farms to modern supermarkets. Going forward, policies and investments to end hunger and malnutrition must take account of the needs of poor urban populations and develop strong links between rural food producers and urban markets to support both rural and urban populations.

The Arab Human Development Report (AHDR) 2016 addresses the development challenges facing youth (15-29 years) in the Arab region. Historically the current youth generation is the largest youth cohort this region has had over the past 50 years, making up 30% of its population of 370 million. In light of the youth-led movements and protests during and after the 2011 uprisings, the Report argues for a renewed policy focus on youth development in the region from the perspective of human development. AHDR 2015 deals with the pillars of human development (income, education and health) with the attainment, achievement and equitable distribution of education, and with the challenges of finding stable and decent jobs. Arab youth continue to face policies of exclusion, whether political, social or economic. With protracted conflict in several Arab countries, young Arabs have become victims or perpetrators of violence, challenged by difficulties of mobility and migration. AHDR 2015 aims to engage youth in building an agenda for their future and for the future of their societies. Young Arabs have to be brought back into the centre—politically, socially, economically—by giving them a stake in their future.

Concentrating on the informal sector of the economy—which accounts for an overwhelming proportion of the poor and vulnerable population in India—and their working environments, this analysis is based on the latest information from the 61st round of the National Sample Survey 2004–2005. Combining those results with supplemental data, this account proposes two comprehensive bills as well as a number of measures to ensure minimum work conditions and promotions of livelihoods for both the agricultural and nonagricultural laborers. This publication also includes a CD-ROM comprising three other reports from the commission: Social Security for Unorganised Workers, National Policy on Urban Street Vendors, and Comprehensive Legislation for Minimum Conditions of Work.

This book concentrates on ensuring that the 'corporate message' is communicated to stakeholders in a way that maximises the value of the annual report and outlines how this might best be achieved. It explains the importance not only of the quantitative (accounting) information but also the qualitative content such as the chairman's statement, directors' report, operating and financial review, explanatory notes and so on. Particular recognition is given to the legal, stock exchange and professional accounting requirements as well as to the increasingly important but more discretionary areas of content such as social, environmental and ethical reporting issues. Crucially, the book discusses the importance of electronic communication now that legislation allows companies to deliver information over the internet. On a practical level, the book takes the reader through the procedures and processes in actually managing the preparation and production of the report. Both the practical and theoretical aspects of the book are placed in context by the use of relevant extracts taken from 'real-life' annual reports of major organisations. By using these authentic examples the book clearly highlights what works and what doesn't.Ensure that your company's annual reports conform to the highest standards of best practice. Don't waste the opportunity to deliver your message.
