“There is no better person than Ram Charan to provide advice on managing in a downturn.” –Larry Bossidy, former Chairman & CEO Honeywell International Inc. But from Charan - who has already brought us bestsellers such as Execution and What the CEO Wants You to Know - it seems plausible. His forte is bold advice, delivered with convincing rhetoric. And he has completed his new text just at the right time." --Financial Times As a business leader today, you face an unprecedented challenge: the worldwide economic downturn. The worldwide financial crash and the ensuing recession have coincided with other significant long term changes for the Western Economies of Europe and the USA, especially the growing strength of newly developed economies, demographic and technological change, institutional crises and political uncertainty. The interconnected nature of businesses and societies mean the competitive landscape is being transformed, and new economic pressures and opportunities are producing new business models, a rebalancing of economies, and a new HRM. The application of new technology to the processes and systems of people management is spreading, in a world where competitive advantage is increasingly about how smart the management processes are, and how well people are managed. This text is the first book to analyse the way these contextual pressures are producing a game change in the human resource function of management. For anyone who has an HR role or is a line manager, or a student of management, and for those who teach, research or consult in the field, this book encapsulates these critically important trends and what they mean for managing people in the 21st Century.

Why would anyone want to coach businessmen and women who may be tired of their corporate careers or may just want to turn their hobby into a business? Why would anyone want to be a coach? I've asked myself these and other questions many times when I left the "safe" world of being a therapist where the rules of engagement are well prescribed. It's safer in being the expert whose job it is to listen and help reassure folks that they are not losers, that there's meaning in their lives, that all they need is to have a passion for life. The world of coaching is a different arena where coach and client are equal and the coaches job is to "ask the right questions" to get his or her clients to engage in a plan of action that hopefully will change their lives. My coaching style is non-directive, whereby my executive clients discuss their current project assignments and managerial approaches to staff recruitment, development, and retention. I use the following strategies to optimize executive growth to: Model executive development based on individual and company core values Create a visionary approach to problem-solving Establish accountability structures for change Encourage risk-taking behaviors that foster competition and growth Create new markets for your services and product Thus, coaching involves putting self aside and concentrating on the motivation of your client. The emphasis is on the relationship developed between coach and client where each participates in a process of change that holds the client's agenda using the expertise and experience of the coach. Whereas mentoring involves mirroring for your client what the skill might look like (intention), coaching offers a vision for your client that empowers and holds your client accountable. Success = accountability for change.

Leasing is one of today's more complex forms of financing, and, unless you have extensive experience in this arena, making informed decisions can be difficult. Over the life of a lease, its risks and returns change, and the factors that affect the risks and returns also change. In Managing Lease Portfolios, Townsend Walker, an expert in this field, explains how to evaluate the risk of lease portfolios as well as hedge their long-term, non-traded risks. Here, you’ll learn how to apply various financial tools to your portfolio of leases and discover the work that goes into each step—such as measuring the risks of a lease, calculating the returns, and estimating the effects of diversification. Many of the ideas and concepts found within this comprehensive resource have existed for a number of years in the fields of foreign exchange, interest rate and credit derivatives, and the bond and stock markets. This book adapts and applies these concepts to managing leases. Then it illustrates how you can implement these new concepts through concrete models that have been proven to work in the real world.

This development has called upon academicians and practitioners alike to reassess the different aspects of business management such as macroeconomic variables, the nature of the market, the changing features of the workplace, the new work ethos, and/or employer-employee exchanges. In this context, the book provides essential insights on industry innovations, academic advances and policy movements with regard to recovering markets in India and around the globe. The individual papers highlight potential avenues that could allow industry to better understand and respond to the global crisis. The book collects research papers presented at the Global Conference on Managing in Recovering Markets (GCMRM), held in March 2014. Seven international and 120 national business schools and management universities were represented at the conference, the first in a series of 13 planned under the GCMRM agenda for 2014–17.
