Commercial Timbers Of The World
Author: Douglas Patterson
Publisher: Gower Publishing Company, Limited

Size: 28.84 MB
Format: PDF

Pages : 339

First published in 1948, F.H. Titmuss' book of commercial timbers has become one of the most useful and important reference works for the timber trade. This revised Fifth Edition sets out to capitalize on those features which marked the success of previous editions, and provides up to date information on all familiar and many less familiar timbers including all those that have been introduced into Britain since the previous edition appeared in 1971. The new author, Douglas Patterson, has substantially rewritten the introductory sections to take account of recent new applications in addition to existing material on architectural and engineering requirements; they are presented as Part I, comprising a description of the structure and properties of wood and of its preparation for use. Part II carries descriptions of the individual timbers, and is divided into 'hardwoods' and 'softwoods'. The entries are arranged alphabetically by best-known name, and each follows a more or less similar pattern, although entries for lesser-known species are reduced in content. Alternative and local names for timber are given as part of the entry heading, as is the botanical name of the species from which the timber comes. The text describes the geographical origin and general features of the timber and gives a more or less quantitative note on density, durability, movement, workability and treatability and a rough description of the timber's find structure, accompanied, at least in the entries of the more important species, by a drawing of the end grain. Commercial Timbers of the World is an easily-read aid to the recognition and correct usage of over 350 timber species and will continue to be essential reading for all those in the timber and associated trades and to the layman interested in wood.
