The controversial darling and target of the popular press: Scandalous Amedeo Modigliani To contemporaries, Amedeo Modigliani was the very definition of Parisian Bohemia, the controversial darling and target of the popular press and the model on which many a novel, play and film was based. As an artist, the scandalous Modigliani made his name chiefly with his celebrated pictures of women, with almond eyes and long necks and bodies. His style had ancient roots that lay deep in classical antiquity or Africa. But his portraits of intellectual giants of the age, friends such as Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau or Diego Rivera, were inimitable also. In Doris Krystof's study, the scene Modigliani was the hero of comes alive, and his sensitive paintings and sculptures speak in tongues. About the Series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions

Modigliani (1884-1920), a painter who didn’t find much happiness in his native Italy, managed only to find sorrow in France. From this unhappiness was born an original style of painting, influenced by African art, Cubism, and nights of drinking in Montparnasse. His female nudes, with their profound sensuality, aggressive nudity, and enigmatic faces, express the suffering and lack of recognition of Modigliano. He died at the age of 36. This book is made up of paintings which created scandals in their day, but which nowadays are considered inoffensive.

Amedeo Modigliani was the essence of a tragic artist. He sketched furiously, sometimes drawing over 100 sketches in a day, but many of his works were lost, given away, or in some cases, destroyed by Modigliani himself. His favorite subject was by far the human form, painting the likenesses of other artists, such as Pablo Picasso, Diego Rivera, Max Jacob, and Juan Gris, who all sat for the artist. His formal works are characterized an elongation of the human form and mask-like faces, and his work is so unlike any other of his time that it still defies classification. During his time, other artists imitated him by engaging in a self-destructive lifestyle, and still today, his fame lives on in 9 novels and dozen films.

Amedeo Modigliani was the quintessence of a tragic artist. After he discovered narcotics, he developed the philosophical confidence that the only path to creativity was through defiance of social rules and chaos in life. Living in Paris, he had affairs with women, drank heavily, smoked hashish, and drank absinthe. He was against all of the excesses of a Bourgeois lifestyle, and thus stripped them from his life, even destroying paintings that he had made in his earlier years. Thus he began a life which would ultimately end with his untimely death and the suicide of his grief-stricken wife and their unborn child. Although he purposely created a life in which chaos, poverty, and trouble lurked in every corner, he was a prolific artist. His formal works are characterized an elongation of the human form and mask-like faces, and his work is so unlike any other of his time that it still defies classification.

Amadeo Modigliani displays the dialogue that the young Italian artist maintained with antic and extra-Western sculptures from 1910 to 1914. It specifically highlights studies of heads and caryatides, and Modigliani's patient analysis work, such as modulating facial features. Health and financial conditions forced Modigliani to renounce sculpture in 1914. The second part features portraits of Modigliani's friends, also actors of the Parisian avant-garde from Picasso's circle, such as the writer Max Jacob, the merchant Paul Guillaume, Moise Kisling, Viking Eggeling, Jacques Lipchitz, Henri Laurens and Leopold Survage. Beyond friendship, these portraits reveal artistic exchanges, where painters and sculptors became Modigliani's models. In his last years, Modigliani perfected his portrait's style, which made him successful: the frame widens, his palette lightens under the influence of Cézanne. In 1918, he met Dutilleul, who purchased around thirty of his paintings and numerous drawings between 1918 and 1946 and posed as his model in 1919. Contents: Introduction; 4 essays: Modigliani and the art of distant countries; Artists' portraits; Roger Dutilleul and Modigliani; Modigliani and art market. Androgyny in Modigliani's art; Modigliani's library; Modigliani at Nice; Illustrated chronology; Modigliani's models' biographies. SELLING POINTS: * This richly illustrated book explores Amadeo Modigliani's work as sculptor and avant-garde portraitist as much as his brief and productive career through Roger Dutilleul collection. The book considers the singular relationship between this passionate amateur, who became one of the most important collectors of Modigliani's work, and the artist whom he met in 1918, less than two years before his premature death
