In an introduction, Brooks surveys the history of African American dramatic performance from the earliest black theater companies in the early 19th century to the early 21st century. The author notes the early influence of vernacular cultural traditions that had long been practiced in by people of African descent, and moves on to explore the powerful oratory and public speech of abolitionist Frederick Douglass and other public figures, the advent of the African Theatre Company in early nineteenth-century New York City, blackface minstrelry, and the growth of African American theater following the Civil War. The struggle to define the purpose and content of black art--from propaganda to aesthetics--raged on into the 1920s and came to characterize the complex and sophisticated intellectual debates forming around African American culture for much of the modern era. The roles of W.E.B. DuBois, Langston Hughes, the Works Progress Administration Federal Theatre Project, James Baldwin, Paul Robeson, Lorraine Hansberry, and Alice Childress, among many other figures, in the development of African American theater from the 1920s to the advent of the modern Civil Rights movement is examined, and the radicalism of the Black Arts Movement and black feminism on the stage in the 1960s and 1970s explored. By far the most dominant voice in late twentieth-century black theatre (and, arguably in the history of black theatre) was August Wilson, Brooks notes, observing hip-hop music's ascendancy to the center of American popular culture. The author overviews black theater criticism and the development of performance studies at the turn of the century. Following the essay, a bibliography of recommended reading, a chronology of events in African American theater from 1821 to 2005, and a glossary of African American theater companies, institutions, movements, performance styles, and literary works are presented.

Cedric J. Robinson offers a new understanding of race in America through his analysis of theater and film of the early twentieth century. He argues that economic, political, and cultural forces present in the eras of silent film and the early "talkies" firmly entrenched limited representations of African Americans. Robinson grounds his study in contexts that illuminate the parallel growth of racial beliefs and capitalism, beginning with Shakespearean England and the development of international trade. He demonstrates how the needs of American commerce determined the construction of successive racial regimes that were publicized in the theater and in motion pictures, particularly through plantation and jungle films. In addition to providing new depth and complexity to the history of black representation, Robinson examines black resistance to these practices. Whereas D. W.
